Overview
Horizon Finance allows users to add monthly commentary to financial statements at the Reporting Line Item level, helping you add meaningful context and explanations directly into reports. This functionality is aligned with the Global Master Data structure and supports commentary on three key statement types:
✅ Income Statement (Actual)
✅ Balance Sheet
✅ Direct Cash Flow (Actual)
If statements are run over multiple months (e.g. 3, 6, or 12 months), the monthly comments are concatenated and displayed in sequence, allowing for continuous narrative tracking.
🧭 Step-by-Step Guide: How to Add Commentary
1. Navigate to the Correct Entity
You must first select the entity you wish to add commentary to. You can do this in one of two ways:
Use the Entity listing panel on the left side of the application.
OR
Navigate to the Organisation/Fund level and use the search bar to locate and select the correct entity.
💡 Tip: Comments are entity-specific and saved at the individual month-end level.
2. Access the Relevant Financial Statement
Once inside the correct entity:
Go to the Financials module.
Select one of the supported statements:
Income Statement (Actual)
Balance Sheet
Direct Cash Flow (Actual)
3. Set the Correct Filters
Use the Month Ending filter to select the month-end date you wish to comment on.
For Income Statement (Actual) and Direct Cash Flow (Actual), ensure the Period filter is set to 1 month.
⚠️ Comments can only be entered in 1-month view. If you select a period greater than one month, comments will be read-only and displayed as concatenated from their original monthly entries.
Click Generate to view the statement.
4. Enter Your Commentary
Locate the Comments column beside each Reporting Line Item.
Click into the comment box aligned to the appropriate line item.
Type your commentary.
Press Enter or click outside the box to auto-save your input.
✏️ You can return and edit comments at any time by clicking back into the comment box.
🧾 Notes and Best Practices
Comments are automatically saved and linked to the specific month-end.
Each comment aligns to a Global Reporting Line Item based on your organisation’s master data.
If the same statement is run for multiple months, all monthly comments will appear sequentially under each line item.
There is no need to manually save the statement once comments are entered — they are retained instantly.
✅ Summary
Adding commentary helps contextualize your financial reports for internal teams, auditors, or external stakeholders. By aligning comments to line items and periods, Horizon Finance ensures clarity and traceability.
